Five Tips To Help You Maintain Good Eye Health
We rely on our vision to help us read, identify objects, and perceive other people’s behavior. However, as we age, our eyesight usually declines, and could eventually lead to blindness if symptoms get neglected.
However, there are things we can do to maintain sharpness and clarity of vision even as we get older, which will help us to avoid wearing glasses and may also prevent needing a medical procedure to fix impaired vision.
So to help you improve your visual acuity, Dr. Vanessa Luong opt. Prof. Corp. has compiled a list of five tips to help you maintain good eye health.
Tip #1: Regular eye exams
The first thing in maintaining good vision is to have routine eye exams. Many eye diseases must be detected and treated early to prevent vision loss. Often symptoms are not apparent until severe damage to the vision has occurred. Regular eye exams can detect developing eye disease and prevent the loss of sight.
Tip #2: UV protection
Long term exposure to UV rays from the sun and digital devices can increase the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Sunglasses with UV protection should be used during any outdoor activities all year round. Also, consider adding a hat or visor to block UV coming from the top or side of your glasses. Blue blockers on lenses will give you protection when working on digital devices.
Tip #3: No Smoking
Studies have shown that smoking significantly increases your risk for age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye diseases. Smoking isn’t just bad for your eyes, but for the throat and lungs as well. So if you like to light up, it’s essential to kick the habit before it’s too late.
Tip #4: Healthy diet
A balanced diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, can give you the nutrients to reduce your risk of developing eye diseases such as macular degeneration. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to improve the symptoms of dry eye.
Tip #5 Control diabetes and hypertension
Serious eye complications can develop when these diseases are not controlled and monitored, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. An annual eye exam is recommended for patients with diabetes or hypertension to monitor your eye health.
